In Partnership With

Emergency Communications Lifecycle Funding

  • Wednesday, 03/29/2017: 2:45 PM - 4:00 PM
  • Room: S225
  • Session Number:  W26

Public safety agencies nationwide are facing serious system lifecycle sustainment challenges. The challenges originated in 2011, when grant funding for emergency communications plummeted to its lowest point since 2004. At their peak in 2007-2009, grant appropriations totaled about $3 billion per year. Recipients used this grant funding to buy and build new systems. Since 2011, with much lower levels of emergency communications funding available to them, state and locals have been struggling to sustain those systems. Discuss lifecycle challenges, funding the system life cycle, and how the Public Safety Interoperable Communications (PSIC) Grant Program has complicated the challenges. Additionally, the presentation will coincide with the release of an important addendum to SAFECOM and NCSWIC’s Funding Public Safety Communications Systems.
