ProfileRyan Burchnell currently serves as Executive Director of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Alabama’s state police organization, leading the agency’s strategic business operations, external operations and agency performance related initiatives. Director Burchnell is a sworn Alabama State Trooper and serves as the agency’s Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer, as well as the State of Alabama’s FirstNet Single Point of Contact, CJIS Systems Officer and Nlets Principal. As part of his ALEA duties, Director Burchnell also serves as Executive Director for both the Alabama First Responder Wireless Commission and the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Commission. Prior to joining ALEA, Director Burchnell completed a 20+ year career in Florida Law Enforcement retiring as a Major with the Florida Highway Patrol. As a Florida State Trooper, Director Burchnell rose through the ranks within FHP's Patrol Operations Command before becoming a member of the FHP Director's Executive Staff in 2010. From 2010 to 2015 he served in a variety of Executive Staff roles, including FHP’s Chief Investigator and Chief Intelligence Officer as well as Chief Technology Officer for the Patrol’s parent agency, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Between his Florida and Alabama law enforcement careers, Director Burchnell served as Vice President of the Intelligence and Information Sharing Practice at the Institute of Intergovernmental Research (IIR). Director Burchnell holds a Master of Arts degree in Security Studies – Homeland Defense and Security from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology from Florida State University, and an Undergraduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia. Director Burchnell is a graduate of the 255th Session of the FBI National Academy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations Program.
