In the past, LMR systems were proprietary, thus effectively employing “security by obscurity.” But now most LMR systems contain more COTS components with well known computer vulnerabilities. How should these critical systems, which look ever-more-similar to IT networks, be protected? Should these systems be integrated with existing IT systems? How much budget should be set aside for their protection? What additional resources and knowledge will be necessary to ensure their protection?  In addition review the recent DoD Directive 8100.2 Update of Commercial Wireless that covers the wireless infrastructure, the supplicant and the security server.
